Q: There’s a rabbit character in some of your painting about New York, and he/she always appeared like in a dream. Would you please talk about this character? What’s his/her story?
A: It is one of the twelve zodiacs in Japan which originally came from China. There are twelve animals in every twelve years. Twelve years is one cycle. I was born in the year of a rabbit. That maybe why I feel something very close to the rabbit. This character in my artworks is myself. I often replace myself with other characters like rabbit, paper plane, piper, snowman, bird, and etc.
Q: You flew from Japan to New York long times ago, and resident in New York for many years. And now you’re back in Japan. How’s the foreign residence experience influence you and your art? You update some new paintings on your blog during this stay in Japan, would you please talk about them and your observation in this stay?
A: I go back to Japan at least once a year for my exhibition in the past ten years. Japan is my home country and this year I went back just for vacation, but I would still like to keep expressing myself. I keep drawing anything anywhere. Drawing is just a tool for communication. Nothing special for me.
